The Bin is Your Friend

Greetings Gamers,

No matter where you go, there will always be those large bins with CDs, DVDs, and games that the store want to get rid of. So what do they do? They lower the price to anywhere between $1 - $10.

So you're probably wondering: "Well, why should I buy it? Obviously they're not good enough to keep in the store and they just want to dump it on people." Now, that might be SLIGHTLY true, but there are other reasons.

1. They have many used games, sometimes an overwhelming amount. Go to EB Games and you can find a used copy of Bioshock (A fantastic game) for only $5. Sure, it might be hard to wait that long for a game to go that low in price, but if you have a good system, it works. You can also take advantage of borrowing games in the meanwhile.

2. Stores don't like to keep many games when the system is out of date. This is when you'll see many good games go in the bins just because the system itself is outdated. Have a PS2 or Xbox (not 360), then you'll find many games that are being offered for less. Sure, the games may be extremely old, but think about all of the games that you wanted when you were younger and couldn't get at that time. Perfect, right? You can also do this for older systems like a Gameboy or Nintendo 64 when going to game stores that offer games for these consoles. Just don't expect a game like Mario Kart or Legend of Zelda for a cheap price.

3. They also have stock of games that didn't necessarily do well when they came out. But not all good games have amazing marketing and PR. I know of a few games that, while they may not have had amazing graphics, had a descent plot and gameplay that made it fun to play once or even twice. Two that I can easily name would be Red Ninja and No One Lives Forever. Two different genres that were both under $10 and I do not regret buying either.

When looking in the bin, it's about taking a chance, be a risk taker. You may find something unexpected if you keep checking. Don't always get the first game you see because that never works. Buying a discounted game is like buying a discounted book. Look at the cover, look at the previews, and do a bit of homework about it on your smart phone.

Good luck shopping Gamers.
